Happy Veteran's Day, Mommies

Happy Veteran's Day!

In my life B.C. (before children), I served as an active-duty soldier in the United States Army.  I served during the Gulf War, but I was fortunate enough to remain stateside, a fact for which I am still grateful.

A while back I wrote a post about how my U.S. Army Basic Training prepared me well for motherhood.  You know: the exhaustion, the high-calorie food eaten at odd hours, the SNAFUs.

In that post, I missed some of the other similarities between parenting and being a soldier, but I have them today in honor of Veteran's Day.  Take a look:

For Veteran's Day, there's a massive parade in my county, but Little Dude doesn't do so well with parades.  So we'll be calling friends and family members who are veterans to thank them for their service.  What are you guys doing for Veteran's Day?

  1. Life soldiers on for this military family. My husband will be attending a Veteran's Day ceremony on campus with the cadre and his cadets while I run kids to therapy appointments. Autism doesn't stop for Veteran's Day. Just another day in the life for this Army family.

  2. Ah! Very true. :-) And for parents of kids with special needs, we could also include "may be called upon to go to war at any time."

  3. Don't forget "Willing to die for the people you serve".

  6. This made my day. Wonderful post, I've not been military but thank you for your service. I thought of you this morning - I wondered if I remembered to rinse the conditioner out of my hair after my shower...I did! Is it sad to be excited about that accomplishment?? :)

  7. Thank you for your service SRMM! Huzzah to all of our military vets and active duty soldiers (I know that's probably not an all-encompassing enough title, but I'm not sure how to include all branches). Since I'm basically house-bound, I'll spend the day reflecting on the contributions of my Dad and my Father-in-Law and say a prayer for our awesome Commander in Chief.

  8. I love it! And considering my house these days most resembles a war zone, this is quite appropriate.

  9. Thank you for your service, SRMM! And to all veterans, thank you as well.

I love your comparison table. You could add, "Your life is often lived at the whim of bureaucrats, and imperatives outside of your control."
