| Who has the cheese touch? |
So I really almost never respond to pitches from PR people. Mostly that's because PR people tend to pitch me stuff like the cat potty training system. (If you go back and read that one, please note that it means that I have been
Other stupid pitches I have gotten were for a phone app for "the definitive luxury lifestyle brand" (whatever that means) and more recently, for a damn toilet cleaning product. That last one just proves that the PR chick didn't read my blog at all, because on the tab that says "Contact / PR / Ads" there is this picture:
Even more disturbing was that the Toilet Cleaning PR Chick expected me to video myself doing a dance while cleaning my toilet. Um, no. I spend enough time in there trying to potty-train Little Dude without adding to the weirdness. However, if and when Little Dude actually does become potty-trained, I will video myself doing a victory dance to LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem" and post it on YouTube for all to see. How about that?
Any way, you'd probably like me to shut the hell up now and get to the part where you could win something free. I got a pitch to review the Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Cheese Touch Game and was all, giddyup. Because first of all, my kids freaking love those books, and second of all, it's an actual, non-digital, non-electronic, old school board game. Remember those? From back in the Stone Ages when we were kids?
Also, we've been trying to make Sunday night into Family Game Night, and we've played Headbandz so many times, we've all gotten a little too good at it.

I love board games. I especially love board games that our entire family can play without anyone having a meltdown, and those, my friends, are hard to come by.
First of all, you don't have to have read any of Jeff Kinney's awesome Diary of a Wimpy Kid books (or seen the movies, or listened to the audio books in the car, like we have) to play this game. It's actually a game designed to get to know people in your family better. There's also some goofy acting and movement involved, all the better for those of us whose attention spans aren't so focused on weekends when we're off our Adderall.
Wait, what was I talking about? Right. The game.
The Cheese Touch Game is for ages 8 and up, so we did make a few modifications for our 5- and 7-year-olds.
Another thing we liked about this game is that it's quick. Seriously, my kids can't sit still long enough to play a long game like Monopoly. This game was quick and interesting enough that we got through one game and the kids immediately wanted to play it again.
So ... who wants to win a free copy of their very own Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Cheese Touch Game?
Instructions:
To enter to win, leave a comment at the end of this post and answer this question: What's the last NON-VIDEO game you played with your kid(s)?
And dude ... I can't give the game away to "Anonymous," so leave some kind of name or something, mmkay?
I'll pick one winner at random tomorrow morning!

We played Spot it! Quick fun card game that sometimes doesn't end in tears...
ReplyDeleteWe play Ticket to Ride alot (good for the train lovers as well as the math lovers in my family). Also, the Dinosaur Train board game with my little man. We love a good game of UNO as well! Love your blog, girl! You crack me up! Good luck with little dude, it will happen!! :-) Hugs from just north of Austin!
ReplyDeleteWe played the Game of Life just the other night! The classics are always a good time :)
ReplyDeleteI bought an original Battleship game at a thrift shop. We are having a blast with it, and the bonus? Sneaky learning of finding a point on a graph. WIN!
ReplyDeleteUNO! The kids can't get enough of it. :)
ReplyDeleteCheckers! and he beats me every time!!
ReplyDeleteWe played Apples to Apples, which is really funny when you have kids spanning from 8 to 21. My third grader's teacher assigns as homework every weekend "play a game with your family." Apples to Apples is one everyone will agree to (for some reason the teenage boys don't want to play "Tinker Bell's Pardon My Pixie Dust" game with their little sis.)
ReplyDeleteWe last played Monopoly as a family, and for the first time EVAH I actually won. Trouble was the last board game I played w/my girl, and my boy loves to play Yahtzee. He just got Hedbanz for his b'day so we can't wait to play it! We are big on the games around here (cheap family fun!). Love your writing and I can't wait to see your happy dance - when it's time! ;)
ReplyDeleteSpongebob Operation :)
ReplyDeleteMonopoly, my 11 yo is just as ruthless as I am, LOL!
ReplyDeleteWe played UNO. It is always a favorite game in our house. Alida
ReplyDeleteSettlers of Catan! it doesn't even take a lot of alteration for a 5 year old
ReplyDeleteThe memory game, where you have to match up the cards. My 6 year old always beats me. Crystalsball@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteWe played clue my kids love playing detective and its always fun to say mommy(meaning my character) in the kitchen with the knife
ReplyDeleteMy 2-year-old son is OBSESSED with anything Star Wars or Clone Wars (he has a major crush on Ahsoka)...so we play "light sabers" with him every night. He literally reenacts scenes he has seen, tries to use The Force when he's lost his light saber, and collapses to the floor only to be revived by kisses and tickles. SO much fun!!

Hey you guys! I run an after school board game club at my kid's elementary school. We play THINK-y games, and hopefully with some tenuous math connection. Favorites (which work for a big age range) are Blink, Slamwich, Guess Who, and Countdown. For older kids, we really like EQUATE, which is a math version of Scrabble.
ReplyDeleteIf you guys have ideas of good games that would work for the 1st and 2nd grade crowd and are sort of nerdy think-y games, Could you please please tell me? I'm always looking for more ideas. It needs to be games that last less than 30 min.
Thanks a ton!!!
Anna
We've played several rounds of Jenga and Risk within the last week. By that I mean, I've played several rounds of Jenga with the kids, and my hubby has played several rounds of Risk with the kids. I don't do Risk - life is risky enough when you have to clean bathrooms that have been used by a house full of males) - but my boys (one big and two little) love it. I think it elevates their testosterone levels or something.
ReplyDeleteThe last game we played as a family was the character game that we picked up in DC this summer. It asks all sorts of things to help you establish where your values are and where you need to build a more accurate moral view. We all LOVED its open ended questions and enjoyed the answers everyone gave.
ReplyDeleteWe play Hi Ho Cherry O and Elefun (elephant that spits out butterflies that you have to catch with a net). It's hit or miss whether it will be a "fun" experience when we play but I figure the more we try the better family night will get.
ReplyDeleteWe just played Disney Junior Monopoly last Friday night. FYI...the adults got their butts kicked!
ReplyDeleteHaving a Lego Maniac in my house, we own and play several of the new Lego board games. Also, neverending rounds of Spongebob Monopoly.
ReplyDeleteMy child absolutely LOVES the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books, he reads them all over and over, and is anxiously awaiting the next book's release. I suspect he may get the Cheese Touch game for Christmas, because the whole thought of Cheese Touch cracks him up.
Love your blog!!!
We play a really fun game called pentago. Kinda like Tic Tac Toe, and nice because it doesn't last for four million hours like chutes and ladders. my nemesis.
ReplyDeleteBattleship gets prety intence in our house!!!
ReplyDeleteWe played Rainbow Timber which is Jenga with different colored blocks. And you roll a die with colors on it to see what color you have to remove. It's really fun! Except my kids lost the die, so we had to take some pegs out of our Mastermind game and put them in a cup and pick one each time to see which color to pull out of the tower...
ReplyDeleteFun because it's quick (tower falls when someone pulls out the wrong block) and noisy (tower falls when someone pulls out the wrong block). And you can't cheat or fight over who won!
"Trouble" with the children. They really like landing on me and sending me back home. Stinkers!
ReplyDeleteMy little naturalist has a thing for all things...animal. And I'm not kidding. Talk about an intense fixation. Anyway, my mom bought him Animal Planet's Creatures and Features game and he LOVES it! It involves picture tiles of various animal characteristics and animal cards. It doesn't take long to play and well, even I learned something (Did you know that butterflies have scales? Well, I didn't.), but shhhhh!!! don't tell me kids that because they haven't yet figured out that I don't know well everything...yet. We'd love the game. My youngest is too little to play, but we make it a point to have Mom, Dad, and the older NT siblings play time every week in an attempt to level the attention-getting playing field, if you know what I mean. :)
ReplyDeleteWe played "Mousetrap"
ReplyDeleteThe ever popular SORRY!!! :-)
ReplyDeleteThe last NON-VIDEO game that I played with my kid was UNO. And he kicked my butt!
ReplyDeleteMy latest Facebook status, from just last night, says it all:
ReplyDeleteThere's something wrong, yet funny, when you hear your 3-year old yell "Oh damn it!" while playing Candy Land.
p.s. We have tickets for a Jeff Kinney book signing on 11/16. My Space Invader is psyched!!!
We played Lotti Karrotti.
ReplyDeleteIt's a game where you're a rabbit and you have to climb up the mountain to get to the giant carrot at the top. You have cards, each card says how many spaces you move (represented by potatoes) or if you have to turn the giant carrot....which makes hole move in the mountain. You may loose your rabbit down a hole but it's ok you have 5 of them.
It gets a bit wild because you may loose your rabbit down a hole right before you would have won if the carrot is turned.
We play Monopoly quite a bit at our house, especially when Daddy is home, or when the girls really really miss Daddy (like now). So it's been a fairly constant game while we wait to see when he gets to come home.
ReplyDeleteOur last game was memory, the porsche cars addition... big shocker, my husband picked that out.
ReplyDeleteWe love Twister!
ReplyDeleteChristie H.
Candyland, shoot me now. Please pick us!
ReplyDeleteI played Candy Land with my grandkids.
ReplyDeleteKids on Stage, or hide and seek with the dog, it was the same night.
ReplyDeleteUNO is our family favorite, followed by Connect Four & Sequence with the older of the 4 kids!
ReplyDeleteBrandy
Brandyreed44@gmail.com
The last game we played properly was CandyLand. The last game we played was sort of like Yahtzee crossed with calvinball - 5 toy story dice, 5 princess dice, mommy forgot the rules, and so we took turns. The best thing about it was my twins had to respect each others rules and random dancing or lightsaber fights could be involved. Added bonus was the whole speech therapy answering questions correctly multiple times since we all had to recall the rule that was just made up last turn! Von in Willow Springs
ReplyDeleteWe play the version of Candyland with the marvel comic characters.... spiderman, hulk, etc :-) Love it!!
ReplyDeleteWe have a metric crap ton of board games! We LOVE to play. The last one we played was Wits and Wagers at a friends house and I went out and got one for us for Christmas. Fun stuff!
ReplyDeleteThe last game my daughter & I played was Life. I won & didn't even cheat!!
ReplyDeleteGFC: **katiebug**
We played Funglish just a few weekends ago. We love to play games too and have OODLES of them in the house. Just waiting for the 2 year old to be old enough to start playing them (yes, we've tried Candy Land with him -- he just tossed the cards in the air. Clearly he wasn't ready).
ReplyDeletePatti (aka "kaesmom" on various message boards).
UNO. I freaking HATE playing games with my kids. But I'm pretty sure my 7 year old would love this game.
ReplyDeleteMy stepson loves Stratego, and he totally beats my butt every time (ok, once) I play with him.
ReplyDeleteWe play a lot of board games in our house. My kids know I don't say no to board games or books. We played a music trivia board game and scrabble a few days ago. Even though Scene It games are DVD games, they still have boards and we play those regularly.
ReplyDeleteMy Lego- and Harry Potter-obsessed kid got the Lego Harry Potter game last Christmas. I thought $40 was way too much, but it's worth it. It's really original, true to the spirit of the books (though not, you know, in a nit-picky way) and hey, it's LEGO. We also tried a couple of the simpler Lego games, the little magic one ("Magikus" maybe?) and sheep-shearing. Both are really quick plays, and fun, but the HP game is our "go to" when I need to drag the kids away from the screens.
ReplyDeleteThe children that I help take care of and myself included last played hopscotch. We also enjoyed some bubble wars.
ReplyDelete:-)
We just played The Richard Scary Game, super fun! We do love board games at our house.
ReplyDeleteWe play a ton of games, but my kids new fave we purchases a couple weeks ago for them to play while I was in labor, now they're addicted. 'Curious George Discovery Beach' game has kept the attention of my 2, 3, 4, 6 & 8 yr olds for over half an HOUR at a time! Fantabulous!!!
ReplyDelete(Name is Wanda Carl, but I don't have any of the kinds of accounts I can post with)
ReplyDeleteWe played Trouble recently. My kids love pushing down the bubble to make the dice pop over and over and over.
We played Trouble recently. My kids love pushing down the bubble to make the dice pop over and over and over.
ReplyDelete(I figured out how to post non-anon, so you can delete my previous post)
Pictionary!
ReplyDeleteI remember reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid as a webcomic when it first came out. It's cool to see it's so popular now.
I must confess we play a lot of Math Fact Bingo with Lucky Charms. Our school is just mean about math facts. I also like Scrabble for the big kids. Candyland is big with the little guys. I love that one because they can play by themselves!
ReplyDeleteLotte Karotte. It's a German board game that we got for our son when we lived there. It's awesome! Each player has about five rabbits they need to get up to the top of the hill to reach the carrot. So you pick cards that tells you how many spaces you can go. If you get a carrot card you have to turn the carrot and a hole will open up on the board. If a rabbit is sitting on the spot where the hole appears then the player is down a rabbit.
ReplyDeleteIt really is a fun, simple game that we can all play as a family--including our 2-year-old.
I'm pretty sure the last game we played was "Ponyopoly"...tap your hoof 4 times to get paid 4 treats when someone landed at Comet's stable (that you own)...I think I almost threw out my back when I got the card to kick like a bucking bronco. Aye, what we do for our kids. :)
ReplyDeleteMara S.
(I can be found in your FB fans)
The last game we've played is slap jack! Quick super easy and add in some sensory input while you're at it-AWESOMESAUCE! lol
ReplyDeleteCandyland (which auto corrected to Maryland). We made up our own rules which were basically... take out the chute & ladders game too and run the little people all around both boards while throwing around the colored cards. I think we will call it candy ladders because candy chute just sounds wrong. I think we will play 'I can do that' cat in the hat next time.
ReplyDeleteold school Connect Four -- it's an antique and my kid loves it!
ReplyDeleteThe Princess Memory Game. My daughter loves her Princesses! (My name is Cyndi Smith.)
ReplyDeleteWe played Risk with my 9 year old...and no tears when he didn't dominate immediately! I can't say the same for his Daddy, though! No one beats Mommy at Risk!
ReplyDeleteWe've enjoyed Mousetrap, Sticky Fingers (which is great for fine-motor skills) and Apples To Apples. Of course checkers were always good. There's a game out there that teaches someone move-by-move how to play chess card-by-card. I really appreciate your blog.
ReplyDeleteI played memory with my girls using Madeline cards.
ReplyDeleteWe really like playing Settlers of Catan with our nearly 9 YO and just introduced him to Clue. Was so very happy when he moved beyond games based completely on luck (Candyland, Chutes and Ladders) and was old enough to play basic strategy games. Then I went and had a baby, so I'm back to Candyland again with the toddler, but at least I know it's not forever!
ReplyDeleteOops! I meant TRICKY Fingers.
ReplyDeleteThe last game we played was Qwirkle - LOVE that game!
ReplyDeleteThe last game we played was Dora Uno. We love Clue Jr. and Uno around here. Tabloid Teasers is another favorite. It's a blast making up fake headlines, and even the little ones are able to do it (with some writing help). Family game night rocks!
ReplyDeleteThe last game we played was Hugger-Mugger. It's a vintage board game we found at a thrift store. It's kind of a vocabulary/phrase game, and the boys don't usually like those, but they like this one. It's fast and fun, suitable for young and old, and I would buy it for all the kids in my life if they would just REPRINT IT!
ReplyDeleteMemory w/my 5 yo. This of course is the only game people ever buy her so we have regular memory, princess memory, spongebob memory and toy story memory. And yes we play them ALL TOGETHER.
ReplyDeleteWe played How-Many-Spangles-Can-You-Glue-To-Your-Fingers-When-You're-Supposed-To-Be-Gluing-Them-To-Your-Giant-Feather-For-Your-Pre-K-Class-Turkey-Bulletin-Board-? just last night! It was awesome. On so many different levels that I don't even know where to begin. Did you know that different colors of glitter aren't supposed to touch? Or that a spangle stuck to your finger means slinging your hand around and screaming until your mom can catch your waving arm without getting punched in order to pry the spangle off your finger and then try to glue it to the spot you were trying to stick it to only to be told to move it is a fun activity for two Autistic preschoolers? Any game has to be better than The Spangle Gluing Episode as I'm now calling it...
ReplyDeleteWe played Boggle. It's just another thing that we do to make spelling more fun around here. :)
ReplyDeleteWe played Apples to Apples! Love it!
ReplyDeleteWe like doing puzzles, drawing and reading.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway.
I played Twister yesterday and not only didn't die, but can move normally today!
ReplyDeleteWe played Combo King on Wednesday night. Great quick dice rolling game for all ages.
ReplyDeleteHistoryBoy and I played took they game Sorry Sliders and we taught my grand-mom (89 yrs old) how to play and had a great time since he isn't always a chatterbox at her house. It gave them a chance to interact with each other! Giggly and happy! Who won? Who cares? AWESOME!
ReplyDeleteA game of sorry sliders, The kids love the normal Sorry game, but this one is great because you can slide the little pawns around. Can't wait for the Diary of a Wimpy kid game to come out
ReplyDeleteMy kids and I played a game called Baffle Gab just 3 nights ago. My husband has been in the hospital for 2 weeks, and they really needed a distraction, especially my Asperger's son. I collect board games, have over 300 of them, and we play board games way more often than video games (except for previously mentioned Aspie, who has to play Disney's Guilty Party at least once a day, or the world will end).
ReplyDeleteThat last game we played was Yahtzee. Great easy game to help my 8 year old with his addition-- although DH kicks my butt at it. :)
ReplyDeleteWe love Feed the Kitty. (Also popular with my 4-year-old is the Sleeping Queens card game.)
ReplyDeleteWe played Buckaroo. SO MUCH FUN!! We've had it for a few years & my 12 yro Spectrum Guy & my 10 yro sensory/add/slew-o-neuro wonderfulness still love this game!
ReplyDeleteLast one we played as a family was Memory! Oh, We play a lot of Memory
ReplyDeleteThe last game I played with my kids was Clue. But sadly, that was a long time ago. They, however, have played plenty of games without me. Lots of Life, Clue, Hi Ho Cherry Oh, Apples to Apples (regular and Junior), and now on to Chess.
ReplyDeleteOld school memory...mine from when I was a kid.
ReplyDeleteThe last game I played with my 2-year-old was "I'm going to get you", where we chased each other around the house. :) Fun stuff!
ReplyDeleteLast week we had a BBQ and played the "old school" CLUE game. I must explain that I am blonde and with that comes zero deductive reasoning skills, so suffice to say, I sucked at this game. But my 12 year old loved it! Who doesn't like a game where someone gets killed in the parlor with a rusty spoon (preferably to the eyeball) by Dr. Zhivago or whoever!!!
ReplyDeletePictureka is a big hit around here, but I think the last one we actually played was Memory - with actual cards, not on a phone or computer screen!
ReplyDeleteThe last non-video game we played was Swish, and we play Rory's Story Cubes all the time to kill time while waiting at restaurants, therapy appointments, etc.
ReplyDeleteThe last game we played was Dinosaur Monopoly and that was about a week ago. We never entirely finished it because our 2 year old was, well, acting like a 2 year old and cannot sit still long enough to even eat a meal, let alone play a board game. So instead of finshing the game we decided we better spare the house from his tornado like actions.
ReplyDeleteMonopoly Here & Now. We played into bedtime so we had to stop and whoever had the most won. Brother won, Sissy was 2nd, Dad was 3rd and Mom (aka me) was last. I did however own Disney World and we cheered everytime anyone landed on it because we love Disney World so I think I was really the winner.
ReplyDeleteLast non-video game that got played here was Magic (the Gathering).
ReplyDeleteWe love to play Sorry & UNO - winner has to clean up! I have started teaching Yahtzee, too, starting at the top of the sheet & working our way down - until he can learn what each 'entry' means.
ReplyDeleteWe love board games and card games at my house!
ReplyDeleteThe last game I played with my son was Go Fish, I think.
The game sounds fun! We last played Apples to Apples.
ReplyDeleteBananagrams. It rocks. My (older) kids LOVE it. My TEENAGERS love it. 'Nuff said. :D
ReplyDeleteI play Scrabble frequently with my 9 year old, and also Harry Potter Clue when we can round up another few players. My 8 year old doesn't do board games yet. We do a full time Son-Rise program with her so we are always playing non-video games, usually 6-10 hours a day. Her favorites games are physical games like ticking, bouncing on balls together, swing and catch while singing songs and dolls, as long as they are naked! They must all have SPD!
ReplyDeleteTracey
Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do you See? It's a fun preschooler game.
ReplyDeleteWe play games a lot... my kids are super hyperactive (seriously) and we do a lot of physical games to try and wear them out during the day. So I have a lot of tag, hide and seek, and the cranium games where you jump from spot to spot (we have to adjust those games for my 4 yr old since he can't read). We also like the preschool games like Elefun and Ants in my pants lol. My 8 year old is a big fan of the old fav's like chutes and ladders and candy land as well, although I think she cheats to be honest. No one should win EVERY time... lol
ReplyDeleteFarkle! Funny blog post. Can't wait to see your victory dance!
ReplyDeleteSnorta (our newest fav), Clue, Apples to Apples Jr. & Whonu (Said-Who Knew?). Jeff Kinney lives in the next town over from mine and he came to our Book Fair to speak to the kids and do a cool power point presentation and book signing a few years ago. It was before the movie came out. He's a really nice, normal guy with young children. He gave an amazing, engaging "game show" presentation like Jeopardy where the kids could pick a square with a funny title and then we would talk about that. I hope he continues to do well, he deserves it.
ReplyDeleteStephanie W.
We love to play Uno & Farkle!
ReplyDeleteWe play Harry Potter Clue and Dismey Monopoly constantly.
ReplyDelete
