I wasn't going to have a post today, but then this happened at preschool:
Today, Little Dude played indoor soccer with another boy. They took turns kicking the ball into a goal. A few times, Little Dude missed, and the other boy said "you lose!" Little Dude stopped playing, and just stood there, looking down at the floor.
"How about if instead of 'you lose,' we say 'try again!'" I said. "That way no one feels sad."
The other boy nodded and grinned.
"Try again, Little Dude!" he said.
They went back to playing.
Then they played some air hockey. Then they took turns pouring sand into sand toys.
Little Dude: "Martin, maybe we could be best friends."
Martin: "Okay!"
The End.
AWESOMESAUCE!!!
ReplyDeleteMy heart just melted, it's now just a puddle in my thoracic cavity. Good for Little Dude. I am also a fan of this "Martin" character.
ReplyDeleteBest Mother's Day present EVER!
ReplyDeleteBest! Post! Ever! That makes my heart so happy.
ReplyDeleteWow! Just wow! :D
ReplyDeleteFantastic handling of a potentially heart-breaking situation.
ReplyDeleteI too, am now a melty puddle.
WOW! AWESOME!!
ReplyDeleteAnd I LOVE the "try again" idea -- you are so quick-witted!
We're making a horrible melty mess on your carpet, I hope you don't mind ;)
ReplyDeleteLove this, go Little Dude!
Like, like, like! That's great, I hope their friendship blossoms.
ReplyDeleteI am so happy right now!! Recently some little girls were mean to my daughter at school and I decided children are all horrible creatures. This has restored my faith a little. Way to go Martin!!!
ReplyDeleteSo you're telling me NT kids don't suck? (kidding, of course!) Sarcasm is my automatic defense when I'm crying like a fool. :)
ReplyDeleteOh man! I almost cried! Plus I use the "try again" instead of "You lose!" line at the preschool I work at!
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, I want to hug em all and high-five you for being fabulous! X
ReplyDeleteThose moments somehow mean even more to moms like us. Every time another kid is sweet to my Stephen (even though he's low-functioning and doesn't really GET it) I want to award said child the Nobel Peace Prize. :-) So glad you had a happy day.
ReplyDeleteGaah, crying here. Never met Little Dude or Martin but now I need to squeeze them both. What an awesome Mother's Day gift.
ReplyDeleteAwe, so many warm and fuzzies I feel for Little Dude! :D
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post... but even better is how you handled it, how your little dude handled it, and how his friend handled it. I agree with Geneva AWESOMESAUCE!!! Happy heart here too!!
ReplyDeleteMartin is the MAN!
ReplyDeleteSo awesome. Tearing up with you.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Little Dude! Awesome news for you guys! Very cool!
ReplyDeleteThat is absolutely AWESOMESAUCE!! What a GREAT GREAT day!!!

ReplyDeleteThat just made my day! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteAwwwwwwwwwwwww. Just.......AWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThat was EPIC! :D
ReplyDeleteYou are a wonderful parent and teacher. Thank you for sharing the goodness.
ReplyDeleteWow! you are having a happy dance day! :) Next time I feel like saying something affectionate to someone, I will sigh, smile fondly at them, and say dramatically, "Martin... maybe...we.could.be.best.friends!"
ReplyDeleteHappy Mother's Day, you are the best example!
Love, love, love this!
ReplyDeleteAnnemarie...my daughter uses the phrase "that makes my heart so happy" with her 3-year-old autistic son. One day he said, "That makes my triangle soo happy!" and later, "That makes my rectangle soo happy!" He loves shapes, and obviously took "heart" right to a favorite place in his sweet little brain. :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!
ReplyDeletewow. just.... wow. AWESOMESAUCE!!!
ReplyDeleteThat is so great!!! :)
ReplyDeleteI am just so full of joy after reading that post. So darn glad you had that inspired redirect. So darn glad that Martin is a sweet kid. So mushy, melty happy for your momma-heart!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations SRMM. I wish every preschool had someone like you at them. Lucky Little Dude to have found a new best friend and high fives to Martin. What a great day. Happy Mothers Day.
ReplyDelete~physicsmom
LOVE this! Keep up the great work and have a wonderful Mother's Day. :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful mother's day present!
ReplyDeleteOh, this is fantastic! I'm glad you were there and able to witness this special moment!
ReplyDeleteHappy Mother's Day to an AWESOME mommy with AWESOME kiddos.
ReplyDeletei think that was probably the best post ever =) I've been reading your blog for a while now, and I'm always impressed with how you deal with different situations. I've gotten to the point where when ppl make comments about one of my kids (ohh... over a yr and still not talking, hmm?) I just smile and kinda walk away. Let them think I'm a lazy mom, i dont care. Thank you for keeping me sane, because honestly, I sometimes think I'm the only mom out there with kids who aren't "perfect" and that everyone looks down on me for it.
ReplyDeleteThis makes me so happy. Friday, Morgan played on the playground with her friend Coco for about an hour. Coco pretended to be an animal with her and used her jacket to cover up the "baby leopard" (Morgan). Made my weekend.
ReplyDeleteYay for Martin. Believe it or not there will be many more Martins in Little Dudes life. I am constantly amazed at the friends Rocco makes in school. Maybe one day I will stop being amazed and just realize as different as they can be, there is a person out there just right for them.
ReplyDeleteGood thing you're there at school so you can turn those moments around. This is why I have both my kids in parent participation schools...
ReplyDeleteYay! Happy day!
ReplyDeleteTHAT. IS. AWESOME!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThose moments are so precious.
ReplyDeleteDoes Martin realise he now has a friend for LIFE ?
ReplyDeleteI'll never forget the day, a few years back when my Alex was about 3 and we were on a bush walk with his sisters' Joey Scouts and Alex took a shine to an older boy, about nine, and I got talking to the boys mum and he had aspergers too. And the boy came up to me and said 'i want him (pointing to Alex) to come to my house'. Alex asked for ages after that when they were going to play.
