The Book of Awesome

{{Note: Comments and contest are now closed.}}

To enter to win a copy of The Book of Awesome, leave me a comment and tell me something awesome.  It can be anything: that someone else unloaded the dishwasher, that you got a piece of good news, that you made it through the day without throwing a brick at the television.  Whatever.

Thank you so much to everyone who responded with advice (or just sympathy) to my rant yesterday.

The Book of AwesomeOne of my readers recently put me in touch with a writer named Neil Pasricha, who writes a blog called 1000 Awesome Things.  He writes about the awesomeness of the everyday: illegal naps, terrible businesses run by children, and wearing underwear just out of the dryer.

Seriously, I defy you to look at this list and not feel better.  His blog is so full of the awesome, that now it's a book: The Book of Awesome.   Neil was kind enough to send me his book to read, and it's simply wonderful.   The Book of Awesome is rich with reminders of how amazing everyday life is.

Your comments yesterday also reminded me that in moments like this -- when I'm overwhelmed by raising four kids, trying to sell a house, and missing my husband -- it's important to breathe and enjoy each moment for what it is.  And also to give the kids baths before dinner because it's not like I'm going to have more energy later.

I wish I could give each and every awesome one of you a copy of this book.  You should have it as a badge of your awesomeness.  The awesome people in your life should have it for Valentine's Day.  If I was Oprah, I'd scream, "look under your chair, because Neil Pasricha is hiding under there with a copy of his book and we're all going to Australia!"

Alas, I can only give away one.  And we're not going to Australia.  And Neil Pasricha is not hiding under your chair.  As far as I know.

In the spirit of 1000 Awesome Things, here are ten awesome things about my day yesterday:

1. It's warm enough here that I wore flip-flops and capris.
2. E-mails that made me laugh.
3. This news story: Law enforcement, community, and a little dog collaborate to find autistic 6-year-old who wandered
4. My laundry? It's done.
5. Designing a stabbity Valentine card.
6. No one needed help with math homework.
7. Pizza delivery.
8. Paper plates (sorry, environment).
9. We played outside after dinner and I taught the girls how to do cartwheels on the lawn.
10. Little Dude saying, "I just want to snuggle."

Your turn!  Leave a comment, tell me something awesome and you'll be automatically entered to win your very own copy of The Book of Awesome

  2. My 16 month old can hit the whiffle ball off a tee without help! Also just found out that my 3 1/2 year old made the cut off to play t-ball this spring. He is super excited and we are too! He also doesn't need the tee anymore to hit the ball, we can pitch to him. Okay, so lots of awesomeness here!

  3. My friend Johnny B. Truant's Badass Project. Check this out: http://thebadassproject.com. It's awesome because it's all about "disabled" people who've done things that most of us who are able-bodied can only dream of doing. It.is.awesome. 'Nuff said?

  5. My little bit of awesome for the week is: my aspie-ish 4 year old son who doesn't really talk much, climbed in bed with me and my husband and said 'I wuf you Mama, I wuf you Daddy.' The sweetest thing ever. :)

  7. The extra leaf to our bedroom door that allows us to wheel our son's crib into the living room at night! It's *as though* we have a two bedroom apartment in that we can let him cry it out in the morning without him looking at us from his crib!! :)

  11. The ADDITIONAL 12 inches of snow that we're expecting today - on top of the 60ish inches we've had already - didn't start until AFTER my husband got to work and my son left for the bus stop! AWESOME!

  12. After a REALLY difficult day with my 9-month old, I made him laugh by singing the no-more-monkeys-jumping-on-the-bed song. I totally needed to hear his laugh at least once today.

  14. Yesterday my 2 year old helped me unload the dishwasher. It took about 10x as long, but we both enjoyed every minute of it. Also, she spilled strawberry yogurt all over the floor, then ran and got a dish towel and cleaned it up all by herself. Small victories are awesome.

  15. My son has a slight speech delay and started getting services in October -- he's recently started using one and two word sentences... at dinner last night, I offered him something and he looked at me and said "No, I don't like"

  17. Thanks for the reminder. I think I'll do an awesome things list on my blog today too. My awesome thing to share is that this weekend my hubby helped the older two daughters (9 & 10) install a new faucet in their bathroom. Now the youngest (nearly 3) can finally turn the faucet on and is going potty WILLINGLY so she can use the pretty faucet.

  18. Thanks for asking for these thoughts. Yesterday was not a great day, but looking for something awesome to say reminded me that I am one lucky girl despite my daily grind. My awesome thing: my five year old made my 1 year old laugh for 15 minutes straight.

  19. Yesterday I bought supplies for the kids to make their valentines, and everyone is so excited they couldn't possibly wait until after school today to get started. And today we woke up to discover that school was canceled. Win!

  20. I cannot top some of these, they are pretty awesome...but my most awesome thing yesterday was that I got to eat pizza AND pasta AND bread last night for dinner. It was so yum and I enjoyed every bite and refused to feel the least bit guilty.

  23. My awesome moment?

Knowing that even though my son isn't in the best school and doesn't have the best teacher ever,

He has good friends who are willing to help out in ANY way imaginable when he forgets to bring home his homework....these people are AWESOME!!!

  24. My daddy surprised my son with a REAL guitar. My dad's played in a rock & roll band for 47 years and my son wants to "be like Rock" (that's what he calls my dad) That's awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  25. My awesome moment? One my students - an adult returning to get her degree, the mother of SIX TEENAGERS, God love her, who has had a very tough life - made the best observation in class yesterday and put all my true freshmen to shame. I was so proud of her I wanted to cry. Pure awesome.

  26. I gave myself permission to cut back on my son's therapy sessions (4 days a week) & not feel mommy guilt. Instead we're spending more time together doing mommy/kid things now, since he should be starting school at 3 in the fall. We even took the day off with Daddy yesterday!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Awesome is every morning, before we all get up, my kids jump in bed with me and we snuggle in for a few minutes before starting the chaos of getting out the door to school/work. It's the best part of the day!

  28. I gave my 13 year old niece a copy of The Book of Awesome for her birthday last year. She thought it was AWESOME! :)

  31. My awesome moment will be this weekend when my BFF and I are leaving the kids with the hubbies and heading on a 4 hour road trip to Ikea!!! =)

  32. My moment of awesome this morning: In the midst of my husband puking, my 5 1/2 year old coughing uncontrollably, and my 19 month old screaming, realizing that I'm about to be snowed in with these people for at least 2 days (16-20 inches of snow and blowing forecasted for the next 36 hours), I was able to snuggle and laugh with my sweet baby girl in bed as she had her morning milk. Those giggles made everything right with the world. Pure AWESOME!

    ReplyDelete
  33. My 7 yr old scored a basket this week, my 9 yr old was told to guard the "best kid" on the opposing team (which could only mean my son plays some mean defense)and I was told by the woman who runs the daycare at my gym that my 15 month old is so well behaved and smart....AWESOME!!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I took my SPD/Aspie son to a birthday party on Sunday and he had fun! He melted down almost immediately after we got in the car and hasn't recovered fully 48 hours later, but while we were there he enjoyed himself! Small steps, you know? :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hubby brought the baby to bed and returned him to his crib for all 5 of last night's feeds. Less awesome for him, but for me super awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  36. My 5 year old son is sitting across from me at the table, reading a book...by himself!

Thanks for the post today! It is way too easy to overlook the awesomeness of everyday.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I got all but two things done on my to-do list yesterday! That never happens! Even better, a few years ago I would have not considered that awesome because I didn't get it all done. Now I have enough perspective to realize that crossing anything of that list is an achievement and I deserve to quit work for the day when the kiddos go to bed. AWESOME!

    ReplyDelete
  38. It's a snowday and the kids made their own toast and are playing outside without fighting while I'm sitting her in my pj's - AWESOME!

  40. My 5yo little buddy with aspergers, who always only has one friend at a time, and it's never been a girl, let alone his 9yo sister ... said today to her in the back of the car "you can be my best friend, can I hold you hand" ... and they held hands in the car all the way home.

It lasted about an hour !

  43. My 6 year old, the world's pickiest eater, asked to try some Greek yogurt (if you've tried it, you know that stuff is SOUR) and LIKED it.

I do a Snoopy Dance every time we get a new food into him. It doesn't happen often, hence, it's awesome.

  44. I got the oil leak on my truck fixed and I *think* we figured out why it doesn't like to start sometimes... ordered the doohickey (that's a technical term) and will get it put on today!! It will be SO awesome to be able to jump in and take the little one to school without having to fool with it trying get it started!!

    ReplyDelete
  45. While this wasn't "awesome," per se, it was pretty darned funny and involved the use of the word "awesome."

While in the midst of an early morning snuggle with my overly honest 6 year-old, Liam, the following exchange took place:

Liam: Mommy? Do you think you're the most AWESOME Mommy EVER?

    Me: No. Not really.

    Liam: Me either!

Cuteness definitely has survival value, as does a sense of humor :o).

  53. My almost 9 y.o. daughter cleaned her room this week!! She asked for help to get started, then went through the whole room and organized it, and even cleared off and dusted the desk and dresser. Amazing! The best part is that she says she likes how much more pleasant it is to be in her nice, clean room, and she wants to keep it neater. Awesome? Yes!

  60. While cleaning yesterday, my husband and I found a $5 gift card to Wendy's that we didn't know we had.

In the last few days, our 7-month old daughter can push herself onto her hands and knees. I can't wait for her to start crawling.

For the last two nights, my daughter has slept from 6:00 pm until 8:00 am, only waking up once inbetween. I've actually gotten a decent amount of sleep, which is awesome, because I'm sick and need it.

    1) Over 40 people have donated to my daughters fundraising website (www.giveforward.com/our-angel-delaney) raising over $2200. The MOST awesome part about that -most of those people are complete strangers. Generosity for the sake of it is ALIVE!!!

    ReplyDelete
  67. I took my children to a restaurant for dinner last night. No yelling, no fighting, no "I need that crayon" just a pleasant meal and then an easy bedtime reading Piggy and Gerald books (I was piggy, The Boy (tm) was Gerald)...Yay! Awesome!

  70. 1)For the first time ever, my daughter was able to blow out her birthday candle BY HERSELF.
2)My daughter managed to eat cake icing, which is HUGE because she never eats any regular food.
3)There is a journalist who is also a lawyer who is extremely interested in covering our medical insurance battle, and it looks like he's going to be able to do it.
4)The kids are home today because of freezing rain and they're actually behaving themselves!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  71. I also wore capri pants yesterday (Houston in January, yo) and the whole fam damily goes for a 45 minute bike ride each day that it is not raining. Even the surly 17 year old and the terrible 2 year old.
High five on the cartwheel thing. You are awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Yesterday my son (2 1/2) went into the kitchen by himself and attempted to do the dishes. When I asked him what he was doing he said he was helping me. :)

    ReplyDelete
  73. Lovin' the cartwheel teaching! My 7 year old ASD son, who is a challenge every morning to get dressed and in the car to go to school and is often very wrapped up in his own little world and I worry about connecting with him all the time, totally asked me: "Mom, are you ok?" when I whacked my head on the cupboard door that I forgot to close as I was grabbing my keys (and it hurt so bad and I wanted to cry but you feel like a baby for crying but it really hurts, dangit)! Pretty awesome.

  74. We may get to move to London, England this year so my son can participate in a clinical trial that could extend his life and keep him walking longer.

    ReplyDelete

  79. The day after my birthday, my 13 month old daughter slept in til NOON(!!!), I got a cheque in the mail for 2300 for my retroactive baby bonuses (I didnt apply til november, my daughter was born in on christmas eve), and have gotten 2 more for a grand total of nearly 4 grand. Certainly helps with savings for her, car maintenance, and bringing things up from my move back to my home town. ooh, and a small spoil now and then. My cousin is amazingly zen about her body rejecting her pregnancy, acknowledging that shes too immature for that life change right now, but more than willing ot admit that she wants children later in life. I have gift certificates to spend, time to do it. My Bits tried helping me fold laundry and wound up wearing mommys sexy underwear on her head. I cherish my little girl.

  81. My son with SPD just ate applesauce. For the first time since he was 9 months old. It only took 4 years to get him to try it again. Awesome. The rest of this snow day could go to hell, but I've got this one miracle moment.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Just having a moment of sulk over the capris and flip-flops. Yes, I'm wearing a tank top and capris inside, but it's not the same.
Bit of awesome? We still have power (knock wood), and the dog was so horrified by the pelting ice-snow this morning that he's actually stopped the obnoxious nonstop bark-until-I-bark (at the kids, to take him outside) game that he pulls every.single.time the kids stay home. Yay!

    ReplyDelete
  83. Despite recently diagnosed food allergies and a pending SPD diagnosis, waking several times through the night still, my son is AWESOME. I wouldn't change a thing about him.

  84. I am going through my Master's in Counseling program to become a marriage and family therapist so I am super busy being a mom (two teenage girls), wife, student, employee, bible study couples leader, MFT trainee/intern so getting through each day is like a marathon. I am so incredibly grateful for my children, my husband, my boss (real job!), my fellow students, and instructors. For the times my head is about to explode because of my research class I get a text or phone call from my classmates telling me how how much "this class sucks butt!" and what can you do with that but laugh...get a call from my daughter laughing at me and my manic self because I tell her to get on my husbands good side by bringing home cookies then texting her back and saying "nvrmnd, too late and dangerous". Her laughter brightened my day. When I finally got home from school at 10:30p my youngest is waiting for a hug telling me she loves me and misses me AND her homework is done so I don't have to stay up till 1a keeping her company. My husband gives me hugs and kisses during work and at home (we work together!)then my husband gave me a massage above it all. I have clients that I feel honored to be helping. I have a great life and am very fortunate.

  86. It's -8 degrees here in Denver, as such my daughter's school is closed. My office, however, is not closed, so they said "Bring your kids to work day!" So I'm sitting at work next to my 6 year old daughter who has decided to sing "Amazing Grace" at the top of her lungs.

And I have *no* inclination to stop her.

  87. Yesterday was one of those throw in the towel awful days for me, so I SO needed this today.

    Awesome things from yesterday -

    1. watching the 3 year old cuddle contentedly eith her father on the couch. Just melty awesome.

    2. said 3 year old greeting me as soon as I got out of the shower with, "I'm really sorry I wrote on the wall. Let me show you..." Not awesome that she crayoned the wall, but super awesome that a) this time it's not 2 hours before a house showing and on 5 walls and 2 doors and b) she told me as soon as it happened.

    3. Best awesome of the crappy day: Dh randomly texted me to tell me that his lunch was great and that he appreciated it - and it was 3 day old leftovers :-)

    ReplyDelete
  88. I've been working on managing my anger, and I did not yell at my kids yesterday at all, not even once. My kids and I all think that's AWESOME!

  89. My Awesome is that Asperger-boy did NOT stroke out this morning when we told him we were not taking him to school even though there WAS school, despite the fact that driving is near impossible today. On the rare occasions that he is not well enough to go to school or otherwise has to not go when everyone else does, he puffs his bony 13 year old self up and has a mad-ass shitfit. Today, small grumbling and moderate acceptance. In fact, when my mom heard he stayed home she said, QUOTE "I didn't feel the disturbance in the atmosphere!"

Thank you, God; I owe you one (more).

  90. Watching my son do a happy snow dance. He's so excited that it might snow down here at the tip-o-texas. (Or at least see flurries.)

Also, took the little guy to the ENT and he is fine from surgery, can hear, can breath and does not need to come back for a year!!! AWESOME

  94. My kids are FINALLY feeling better after four weeks of the worst cold I've ever had (them too, but they're little), culminating in a run of antibiotics (with all the ensuing side effects) for the baby and a case of stomach flu for the three year old (caught, presumably when we took the baby to the doctor.) If anyone else comes near me with their germs, I will run screaming down the street.

  105. I created a blog about my adventures in getting healthy. The first post an adventure in mental health. I wrote my father a deeply emotional letter facing all the feelings of the past 32 years. I was terrified of laying myself open, but I felt an incredible lightness after letting it all go. Freedom after a lifetime of pain -- awesome! On top of that, friends and family (that I worried would judge) have instead lavished me with love and encouragement. Awesome!!!

Next post... thankfulness! First on the list -- SRMM who makes adventures in Autism humorous!!!

  106. OH, this is fun... let me play too!

    how about.....

my son running laps around the house chasing away the bad guys with his plastic sword... wearing absolutely nothing but a pink Dora backpack on his back, a pair of clip-on dangly xmas earrings, and a crown he made in school!

  107. my awesome moment was reading your post. Thinking back at my own hopelessness when I was by myself with two kids, trying to sell a house while husband was four states away. I just didn't think I would make it.

I made it. You will too. And when you move back home, reconnect with your husband, sell your house, realize you did all of the day to day by YOURSELF and without a super cape...it is awesome.

  108. Today my 4 year-old son (who has the "official diganosis" from a very well-respected Children's hospital of mild Global Developmental Delay and Autism "can't be ruled out") got out of school at 12:30. His behavior was so a-typically good that his teacher asked if we had started medicating him . . . and we haven't.

  109. My eight year old told me I'M awesome, and the baby slept through the night IN HIS CRIB. It's all about the little things!

  111. Thank you all for the happy tears I got reading your comments.

My 3 year old daughter (in full Snow White regalia) voluntarily touched her 5 month old baby sister today. Not only did she touch her, she ran over, got a burp cloth and used it to wipe up her spit up. Without being asked. And during lunch, she laughed and laughed as the baby tried to grab the spoon and feed herself.

Awesome that I'm finally having glimpses of a future with happy sisterly bonding.

Also, they're both napping. At the same time.

    2) My little man is growing and changing by the minute.
    3) He makes me smile all the time...except when he makes me want to scream of course.
    4) Things just feel "right" lately.
    5) Life is a struggle but GOOD.

  122. Back in 2009 my brother was in the hospital for four months, then doing physical therapy for many months following. I drove him to therapy and the doctor and everywhere while he was recuperating. The awesome thing is now he is well enough to drive ME to therapy, since I threw my back out the day after Christmas. Families are awesome!

  124. Today I found out that my 11 year old daughter (who lives with her dad and stepmom) cut her hair over the weekend, donating it to Angel Hair For Kids, a non-profit organization that makes wigs for children (after much research). Then she dyed her cropped hair bright turqoise. That is all kinds of awesome in my book!

  127. I'm so glad for this post, as I too get mired in the yuck and forget to look for awesomeness.

Today my 5 yr old son looked at me and asked "When is Papa coming home? I'm sick of always being stuck with you." That was not awesome.

What was awesome is that Grandma called to ask if he could get snowed in with her tonight and spend the day there tomorrow! Awesome for both of us.

After months of fruitless fighting, phone calls, visits, emails, buckets of tears, screams of frustration, threats of legal action, and wondering whether I will EVER be able to help Logan on my own after his Early Intervention OT quit last August~ today the replacement Occupational Therapist called and set up an appointment for next Friday for Logan. My cup runneth over. We'll be okay. All of us.

  140. I went to Ikea today by myself, no kids to drag around or wait in line to leave in the play area only to be paged back after 15 minutes because of some minor drama, and during work hours no less because I had some flex time. It was nearly empty and full of nice-ish but affordable things we've been needing around the house for like 3 years now. And I had the meatballs for lunch. Awesome!

  141. Even though I am a military spouse, and hubby is on a deployment, today was great. I made chocolate chunk cookies, and only had to share with the kids! Got a new developmenral services worker to do my son's IBI training at home! Had a successful meeting at son's prospective school! Didn't cook supper! Didn't clean! Had a nap with my daughter! Had a successful trip to the grocery store with all three of my kids! My daughter told me I was beautiful! My baby said bye bye clearly and stood confidently in the middle of the kitchen directing the "symphony of children and mommy putting away groceries"! AWESOME!

  146. I am a single parent. There is nobody to share the task with and I am entirely use to doing it alone. This fact doesnt make it any easier when I am awake for the 11th time in the night dealing with a four year old who wants to watch TV or paint or something other than sleep. Last night, my boyfriend took over and let me sleep an entire night. Sleeping a whole night without getting out of bed once for the first time in four years was AWESOME!

  147. My husband and I found out recently that we are pregnant with our first child, I've been having the worst time with morning/all day sickness but so far I have managed to get to work and not throw up at all today, to be honest I'm actually feeling somewhere near normal which is awesome.
