Review and Giveaway: GIANTmicrobes

[Note: Comments and contest are now closed.]

First off: the awesomeness.  GIANTmicrobes has given me a plush cold virus and a plush flu virus to give away to one lucky reader!

To enter to win the toys, leave a comment at the bottom of this post.  For me to be able to reach you, you need to either like me on Facebook or leave your email somehow in your comment.

Only one person can win, so you can also like GIANTmicrobes on Facebook and on Twitter if you want to be kept in the loop on other give-aways they might be doing.

To enter to win an actual cold or flu virus, send your children to school / daycare / friend's house / grocery store / playgroup and they will conveniently bring one home right to you.  That way, everyone can win the prize of being violently ill.

So, Little Dude has this germaphobia thing that started when his preschool did a program on the flu virus.  It included seeing a video about Scrubby Bear.  It's one of the freakiest videos imaginable: child-size Pedo-Bear who has broken into the house, hanging out in the kid's bedroom at night; talking claymation soap dispenser; and rapping human-size germs.

Thus, some interesting new OCD behaviors were born in Little Dude, which I wrote about in my post Fun with OCD. Um, Not Really.  Several readers left comments on that post that I should check out GIANTmicrobes.  Because I am always happy to learn from the experiences of other moms, I went directly to the GIANTmicrobes website.  Because I am cheap and don't receive any income from this blog, I then emailed GIANTmicrobes directly and asked if I could have a couple germs to review and a couple to give away.  And they said yes!  Because they are awesome like that.

Now, it's not like I just gave Little Dude these cute plush little guys and it solved his OCD or his germaphobiness.  But, I've used them as tools to discuss how there are good germs and bad germs.  I'm using them to reinforce the idea that the germs he saw in the school videos were pretend.  I'm still using their website to show how teeny-tiny actual germs are.

The pretend vs. real thing is an ongoing struggle for Little Dude, partly because he's four, but partly because many Aspergians tend to take things literally.  So we're working on it.

I love GIANTmicrobes.  Each toy comes with an illustrated card with a magnified photo of the actual virus, facts, and tips for avoiding getting sick.  The website is full of the awesome.  They have all kinds of crazy germs that make terrific gifts for just about everyone on your shopping list.  I mean, isn't there someone in your life that deserves to get the clap?

And with so many crappy toys on the market (Bratz dolls, I'm looking at you), wouldn't you rather give your children something that's fun, disgusting, and educational?  Which reminds, me, I've got some great idea for joint marketing.

Okay, probably, you don't want to give your little girl chlamydia.  A petri dish of fuzzy E. coli, though, that's just awesome.

  1. Awesomeness, indeed. If only I'd known the cold I caught last week from my grimy kindergarteners is so cute, maybe I'd be taking better care of it, instead of ignoring it and hoping it goes away all by itself. Meanwhile, coughing and hacking and generally scaring my co-workers furthers the general opinion that the cold virus is an ugly beast, not a soft and fuzzy thing to snuggle with!

  8. These would be awesome to use in my classroom! My own kids could care less about germs. My son licks everything he sees...part of his sensory-seeking behavior. So gross.

  16. LOVE THE GIANT MICROBES! My friend got a black mold one for her birthday...since her bathrooms were infested with it and renovations were on the way. to quote "I didn't know something so lethal could be so cute!"

  17. I wanna win! I am also on your FB too. These are "wicked cute". I am part of the working mom club so if I win the next time one of my kids are sick and I need to stay home I am going to send a picture of one of the viruses to my boss letting him know they took over.

  19. As always, thanks for the lol's SRMM. Not posting to win the microbes--the last thing we need is another stuffed animal that magically transforms to an evil being the minute the lights go out. And yes, I do have someone that would love to get the clap for Christmas!

  20. Long time lurker, first time commenter. This was too good to just remain silent.Would love to have one of these lovely items to throw at the high school students I work with when they forget to cover their mouths...at that age they need a BIG visual reminder, because something clearly isn't working.LOVE your blog.

  21. I love Giant Microbes! I had one year where I ordered a whole box of them and gave each person in my family a different one for Christmas! They were very confused, although my mom was really thrilled she got the Black Death. Wow, that sounds wrong. But that was before my kids were born, and now we don't have any - can I have one? Pretty pretty please???

Oh, and I like you on FB, so I'm all set to win. ;)

  23. I'd forgotten how much I like the Giant Microbes. Somewhere I have a cold virus that we tried to use as a dog toy. Interestingly, neither dog would play with it. Now that my daughter is a very science oriented 3 year old, I think she needs some for Christmas.

  24. If I don't win (and probably even if I do) I am SO GOING TO BUY A COUPLE!! The preschool hygiene program totally freaked out one of my daughters and she doesn't even have OCD but even now, at age 7, she still worries about the germs that climb into her nose.

  25. I've been planning to get my kids these for Christmas - we get them a plush every year for their stocking anyway. I showed them to DH a couple months ago and he thought they were awesome - he spent 20 minutes in the store, playing with them.

That little cold virus makes me feel bad for hating every cold I've had (though that last one was a real pain in the butt, with all that coughing).

  26. I saw these recently...maybe on ThinkGeek? They are the cutest thing ever. Well, cutest thing ever if you're a huge nerd.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Love them! They are so cute. I'd love to win! (but I know 'I' wouldn't be the one winning because as soon as I open the package one of my kiddos would take it away). Also, I'm totally with you on the BRATZ dolls.

  28. I would love one of the microbes to give to my HUSBAND for Christmas. It always seems like he never gets sick like the rest of us. And I'm sure my boys would enjoy playing with it after he opened it.I follow on FB

  29. These are super cute, but I don't think I want any more "plush" things!! And my daughter has nightmares about the germ movie from school! Another hilarious post - LOVE your marketing idea!

So, did they give you the swine flu?

  35. Great review! And who knew germs could be so stinkin' cute.

And LOL at Bratz. I can't stand ANY of those dolls. It has been made clear to both girls that Bratz, Barbie, etc. will never be allowed in my house.

  36. The joint marketing idea? Brilliant!

    ReplyDelete
  37. i just checked out the website...these would make hysterical gifts!! Love it!

  38. This just might help me to laugh a bit at my OWN intense fear of viral infections. Would cuddling up to the flu while being deathly afraid of catching the flu be a good therapy? It just might work...

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh geeze! These are the cutest buggies I've ever seen! I love them!

    ReplyDelete
  40. We already have a giant flu germ--my 8-yr-old Aspie became obsessed with it last year--it was all he could talk about for weeks. So Santa brought him "Fluey" who sleeps with him every night. Go figure. The only stuffed critter he'll cuddle up to is a flu germ.

  41. I think these things are really cool. I'd love to have one. I like you! On Facebook and in real life :) Nicole

  44. I LOVE GIANTMicrobes! We have the Ebola virus that I picked up at Pacific Science Center for my husband a few years ago. We've been talking about getting more.

I follow you on facebook, so I'm set if I win.

Oh, and a note on the Bratz dolls.... I saw an interview with the creator years ago, and she pointed out that she'd never intended them to marketed to the Barbie age group. Her dolls were supposed to be for older girls/young teens, hence the way they dress and appear. And she also pointed out that the "Bratz" name in her family doesn't mean a misbehaving child, it's a cutsey nickname for the kids in the extended family. We don't do Bratz around here, but after I learned that, it made a difference. Made me see them differently.

  45. How cool! I love those things! And, I follow you on facebook- thanks for your daily dose of humor by the way.

  46. @Black Rose - Yeah, I still hate Bratz dolls. I hate the use of "z" to indicate plural; I hate their clothes; I hate their collagen-injected lips. I hate their Halloween costumes most of all.

  47. These are awesome!

Oh, and I follow you on Facebook.

  48. I've followed you on Facebook for awhile, cuz you're awesome and can always make me laugh. I love your blog and I love these GIANTMicrobes!!!! I would love to carry these around with my kiddos to the park and playdates! I think these would be a great conversation starter/ice breaker.

  49. my girls loved the video....wanted to replay! Wouldn't you love to know where those "actors" are now....

  50. Must have! My husband teaches microbiology and immunology and my little guy is quite the scientist. Love the Bratz idea above!

  51. I'm a teacher, so germs are nothing new to me! As soon as 1 kid gets sick, colds fly through the room no matter how often I clean everything! I ought to buy stock in Lysol!

    *I follow you on Facebook! :) *

  52. These are awesome! I would love to have one to throw at my hubby when he says he doesn't feel well when it's time to fold laundry!!

  53. I love these ;-) Saw them a few years ago in the med school bookstore. My little guy is also a germaphobe recently and is beginning to even clench up his hands so as not to get them dirty :/ We are working on it...He loves stuffed animals though so maybe this might help..I have no idea how to post without being anonymous as I don't use any of these email accounts...I follow on FB though ;-) Alisha Ramsey Blackburn

  54. I like/love you on FB, and oh, how my poor perpetually sickly little bug (seriously, I call him that) could use a little cuddle-bug! Maybe a great big microbe would scare all the little one away?

  55. My children by actual babies are better at keeping germs at bay than my HS students. I want one for my desk at work.
BTW, I think that Bratz + clap is hilarious!

  56. When I was little, I had an extreme fear of biological warfare. Now I am a medical student. I love gross things more than you could possibly imagine.

And if you let me win, I will tell you something delightful about flesh-eating bacteria, syphilis, or any other disgusting ailment you could possibly wish for.

  60. As a pharmacist who has given over 300 flu shots in the last month, it would be nice to have some sort of reminder that all of this work has been worth it! Also, my two-year-old daughter would just LOVE to have her very own cold virus of her own!

    ReplyDelete
  61. I think they're cute, but is anyone else freaked out by the eyes? Also, I think they should branch out to parasites like tapeworms and leeches. Cuddley!

  62. I was just wondering how LD was doing w/ the germs. Thanks for the update!

  63. I want to be able to give my husband the Plague. (Weird to write that...) And my girls want to ask Santa for the pink girl one - which happens to be Kissing Disease. Nice.
