I'm Writing a Book. Wanna Help?

As some of you may have guessed, I am working on a book.  It's going to be similar in tone to my blog.  (You know -- snarky.)  It will be all about the ridiculous, messy, hilarious stress of being a parent, and in particular, parenting special needs children.

I really believe that, especially with the rise in autism diagnoses in this country, we need to be talking about how much stress there is for parents.  It's under-discussed, under-reported, and -- as much as I like to make you laugh about it -- serious business.  I think it's important.  I think there should be a book about it.  I want to write it.

I even have a literary agent who's as excited about the project as I am.

The thing about writing is, it takes time.  I'm applying for a grant to help me pay for not just printer paper and toner, but a babysitter once in a while.  (It's really hard to put together a coherent thought when small people are swarming around me, screaming about peanut butter sandwiches and whatnot.)  Time that I spend writing is also time that I'm not earning money (and you know I'm shameless) to help pay for the therapies Little Dude needs outside of his special education classroom.

The grant application asks for letters of references from people who are familiar with my work.  They list professors and fellow artists as examples.  I think that you are the most familiar with my work.

If I have touched your life ...
If I have made you feel less alone ...
If I have made you laugh ...
If I have given you a small break in your stressful day ...

... will you send me an email and say so?  It doesn't have to be a long letter; just a couple sentences would be enough.  I'm going to include all the emails I get in my application packet.  I'll black out any personal or identifying information in the email before sending it in.

Please email me at Mommy (at) starkravingmadmommy (dot) com.

Thanks, you guys.

xoxo,
stark. raving. mad. mommy.

  1. Well, turns out it didn't want to let me email you. I'm not sure why, but after a half hour of it not working I'm cutting and pasting here.

    To Whom it May Concern:

I discovered the Stark Raving Mad Mommy Blog about two months ago. Since then I have read every new posting she makes. I find her descriptions of daily life with autism, allergies, and all of the challenges that go along with it to be insightful, educational, and more importantly, hilarious!

I have discovered that I am able to use her information in my own life with my kids. Mine don't have any health issues, but there are always idiosyncrasies that her children share with mine. The Absent Minded Professor could be my husbands twin. She is also just what I need when I'm frustrated or irritated with my own world, as she always makes you laugh, even if all you want to do is scream.

I'm sure that if SRMM writes a book LOTS AND LOTS of people will buy it. I would even encourage her to have a movie produced in the future, perhaps a fun-filled (therefore interesting) look at mental health issues in North America. The more information the public has about the issues families with special needs the better. I'm certain that presented with SRMM's point of view, we'll see her on the talk show circuit next year! (I'm actually hoping for Ellen!)

I also have to say, I'm thrilled that she lets everyone know where her ideas and comments come from. I was one of two people credited with the "Mind Punch" so of course, everyone I knew heard about it for a week! I was especially happy because she puts it right there where you will see the information, instead of in a bibliography or link somewhere that no-one would see it. I'm directly responsible for at least 3 new fans of SRMM because I love her stuff so much!

It's gonna come out as "anonymous" but my name is Danielle Settle from Northern British Columbia, Canada.
